Shelly Lynne Hedger was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Davenport, the daughter of Shelby and Anna-Mae Klein Hedger. She married Mike Ayers June 29, 1993, in Hampton.

Shelly worked at the Farmall Plant in Rock Island. After it closed, Shelly decided it was time to follow her dreams and work with animals. She took a job at Niabi Zoo, caring for animals. Soon another opportunity arose: managing a no-kill animal shelter in Milan for eight years, until she decided to open her own business. In her final days, she enjoyed being a full-time housewife.

Shelly dearly loved her family and spoiled all four of her granddaughters. She simply loved to laugh. Her time was spent giving of herself to people and animals. She dearly enjoyed gardening, cooking, movies and shopping. Shelly was so very generous and kind.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Ayers, Moline; mother and special friend, Anna-Mae Hedger and Gordon Wilson, Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Monty and Dawn Patton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Oscar Gomez, Moline; granddaughters, Jordan and Hunter Patton, Colorado Springs, and Mercedez and Ava Gomez, Moline; aunts and uncles, Louann and Arthur Bodenbender, Moline, and Leone and Cliff Lewis, Kewanee; and numerous cousins, many special friends, and her beloved pet dog, Bearon.
