Edward L. Lemon, 87, of Moline, died peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline. Services for Mr. Lemon will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, Milan, where he had been a member since 1936 and had served as an elder and deacon. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be in the Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted. Memorials may be made to the church.
Edward was born April 14, 1923, in Moline, the son of the Rev. Ralph Lemon and Ruth Brandenburg Lemon. He grew up in Milan and graduated from Rock Island High School in 1941 and then later from Augustana College. He received his master's degree in education from Western Illinois University. Ed served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS John J. Powers. On Jan. 1, 1949, he married Jeanette E. Martensen in Rock Island. In his words: "The smartest thing I ever did!"
Mr. Lemon began teaching at John Deere Jr. High School in Moline in January 1948. In 1961 he transferred to Moline High School where he taught biology and served as athletic business manager and manager of Wharton Field House until his retirement in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David and Pamela Lemon, Rock Island; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Dale Koenig, Moline, Mary and Kendall Tempel, Shrewsbury, PA; five grandchildren, Tom Lemon, Kristin (David) Koenig-Schriefer, Erin Koenig, Katie Tempel and Mark Tempel.
