Herb Thompson - May 9, 1931-July 1, 2022

Herb Thompson, 91, of Moline, Illinois, well-known coach and real estate agent, died Friday, July 1, 2022, in Cedarhurst Assisted Living, Moline, Illinois.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday, July 8, in First Congregational Church, 2201 7th Avenue, Moline, with The Rev. Becky David officiating. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Herb Thompson Memorial Fund which will be established for the Moline High School basketball program.

Herbert Cecil Thompson was born May 9, 1931, in Forest City, Iowa, to Gilbert and Clara (Charlson) Thompson. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1949, where he was on the All State Basketball Team. He continued his basketball career at the University of Iowa where he was team captain and named MVP in his senior year. At Iowa, he met Floy Ann Kensinger, and the couple married on June 14, 1953, in Tama, Iowa. After college, he served in the US Air Force for two years. He coached high school basketball and taught history and PE for 22 years, the last 14 at Moline High School. His basketball career led to him being named to the Iowa High School Basketball Players Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. After his coaching and teaching career, he began a full time real estate career that lasted 40 years.

Herb was a member of First Congregational Church, Moline, Moline Rotary Club, and Quad City Area Real Estate Association. He loved all sports, especially golf, and anything at the University of Iowa, and enjoyed attending his grandkids' sporting events. He loved Moline, and left a huge legacy due to the many relationships he built during his coaching and real estate careers.

Herb is survived by four children and spouses, Scott and Rebecca Thompson of Tucson, Arizona; Mark and Gail Thompson of Moline; Laura Hamilton of Tucson; and Suzanne and Ron Straus of Plymouth, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Christian, Aubrey, Luke, Joe, Jason, Megan, Thomas, Matt and Katelyn; two great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Ryan; and a brother and sister-in-law, David and Sue Thompson of Irvine, California. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and siblings, Gerald, Alice, Katherine, Marcia, Gretchen, Winnefred, and Margaret.
